"Concepts lead us to make investigations; are the expression of our interest, and direct our interest" (Ludwig WITGENSTEIN) "Et, comme une même ville regardée de différents côtés paraît tout autre, et est comme multipliée perspectivement, il arrive de même que par la multitude infinie des substances simples, il y a comme autant de différents univers, qui ne sont pourtant que les perspectives d'un seul selon les différents points de vue de chaque monade." (Gottfried W. LEIBNIZ)
1. Motivation & Purpose
As agreed at the the founding meeting of the BITrum Group in 2008, the development of the interdisciplinary glossary has been the first action to carry out by the group with a two-fold objective:
- To serve as a tool for an interdisciplinary approximation for a general understanding of information, facilitating access to problems from different perspectives, the mutual understanding of theoretical or disciplinary terms, as well as a better understanding of used metaphors.
- To reflect the state of the interdisciplinary research within the project as a result of disciplinary work and the interdisciplinary debate, thus being one of the public faces of the project.
Because some terms may be of restrictive use in specific disciplines and others are open to general controversy, some articles will be concise and discursive while others may exhibit a larger extension and a dialogic structure.
To facilitate such multi-perspectivistic gestation of articles, any member –or guest authors- may contribute in general into any article, and at the same time, every article has an assigned editor, who commits himself to reflect those contributions (of different authors) in an articulated and non redundant manner. Hence, for every term we may find several independent entries and an article arranged by its corresponding editor (which in its final version will be the article to be edited and published). In such final version, every article will have at the same time Spanish and English versions; while during its edition there will be words which will essentially have entries either in Spanish or English. The fact of beginning first in a language will depend on the editor's capability to elaborate it in Spanish. Nevertheless, the commitment implies that all articles will be reflected in Spanish and agreed within the language (in observance of the group objective of becoming a reference in the Spanish information theoretic frame) and at the same time there has to be an English article (in keeping with the objective of convergence towards an international network). And, of course, to reach an agreement there has to be discussion, comments, debate, quarrel… For that purpose we will use the comments space at every page-foot. The general methodology for Glossary edition is detailed in the guidelines page, where there are also instructions to use the system. All these guidelines are compiled in a pdf document as a user manual.
Finally, let us hope that the interests that matter will find their paths inside the core of concepts, and the different views multiply so that we can see clear that, in every perspective, some details stand out which are invisible for others. Let us also hope that in the unfold of descriptions, agreements and disagreement... a global fabric can be weaved, breaking the isolation of parts and shaping a fruitful interdisciplinary horizon, -remembering Peter’s comments: between the Scila of Babel and the Caribdis of Pentecost.
